Learn more about magnesium:

Unfortunately magnesium deficiency also known as hypomagnesemia is not an uncommon condition in the American population. The percentage of people lacking this essential mineral is fairly high according to numerous studies. Magnesium is essential for healthy muscles, nerves, bones and blood sugar levels. If you don't get enough magnesium in your diet over a long period of time it can create a number of health risks and unpleasant symptoms. The long and short of it is, we need magnesium in our diet and going without enough of it can cause mild to more serious consequences such as muscle cramps, nausea, heart arrhythmia, heart disease, behavioral changes, migraines, seizures and osteoporosis, to name a few.

What is magnesium lotion? Magnesium lotion is essentially a lotion that has a percentage of magnesium in the list of ingredients that make up the lotion. It is used to help ease muscle and joint pain, nerve pain and to help the body relax.

There is much debate concerning the skin's ability to allow any significant amount of magnesium to actually pass the skin barrier and reach the bloodstream. The studies that declare that magnesium lotion can go past the skin barrier and can actually raise the magnesium levels in the body are often dismissed by many in the scientific community. Although there is proof to the ability for magnesium to pass the skin barrier, the scientific community says the studies are incomplete with too many unanswered questions. In short, current studies do not address how the magnesium penetrates the skin barrier. Several argue that the absorptive capacity of healthy skin for substances from the outside is very limited but also acknowledge that absorption may be possible but only at the sweat glands and hair follicles. There is indeed proof that magnesium ions can penetrate these areas. With that said, It is clear that more research for the scientific community is needed to be certain that magnesium can be absorbed through the skin.

In conclusion, in my personal opinion, I do not believe the current literature and evidence-based data on transdermal magnesium application should be dismissed. There is in fact significant evidence that magnesium lotion and oils have been beneficial to a large and growing number of people.

Even with all the debate, still so many have found relief by using magnesium topically. Magnesium lotion has been used and trusted for so many benefits. It can help with relaxation of the body, it can hydrate the skin and protect it. It can slow sensory activity, increase GABA to help quiet the mind and help you sleep. It can help with cramping, nerve pain and restless leg syndrome. It is difficult to ignore the positive results that so many have experienced. Some might argue that positive results are simply a placebo effect. I would challenge that line of thinking. I personally deal with a lot of pain and when my nerves start flaring it's impossible to ignore. Anyone who suffers from this, understands this. Every time I have used the magnesium lotion there is a notable difference within minutes. The throbbing stops. I personally believe someday science will discover the 'why' behind the positive results that people are getting. In the meantime, it's a safe solution to use it topically and well worth a try if you suffer with soreness or pain in the body.

If you believe you are experiencing or have been tested and have a true magnesium deficiency, you should absolutely consult your doctor for the best pathway for your health. This is not an either or debate. A good diet, magnesium supplements and a magnesium lotion can all be great options to get us back on track.
